Programs & Financial Aid

Adelante PTA offers three distinct financial aid programs to support San Jose students at every stage of their K-12 education. Each program is designed to address a specific need — from ongoing tuition support to emergency assistance when the unexpected happens.

Adelante Scholarship Fund

Need-Based Scholarship

The Adelante Scholarship Fund is our flagship program, providing renewable financial aid to students whose families demonstrate financial need. Awards help cover educational expenses including tuition, textbooks, school supplies, technology, and extracurricular fees that would otherwise be out of reach.

Eligibility

  • Currently enrolled in a San Jose-area K-12 school (public, charter, or accredited private)
  • Household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Demonstrated commitment to education (teacher or counselor recommendation required)
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or have DACA status

Award Details

  • Amount: $500 – $2,500 per academic year, based on demonstrated need
  • Renewable: Yes — recipients may reapply each year and maintain eligibility by keeping a 2.0 GPA and submitting a brief progress report
  • Disbursement: Funds are sent directly to the student's school or issued as a reimbursement for verified educational expenses

How to Apply

  1. Review eligibility criteria above to confirm you qualify
  2. Gather documents: most recent tax return or income verification, current transcript, and one letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor
  3. Complete the online application (available September 1 – November 15 each year)
  4. Submit your application and supporting documents by the November 15 deadline
  5. Notification: Award decisions are communicated by January 15

Academic Achievement Award

Merit-Based Award

The Academic Achievement Award recognizes students who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance, leadership, and community involvement. Unlike the Scholarship Fund, this award is not income-dependent — it is open to any San Jose K-12 student who meets the academic and service criteria.

Eligibility

  • Currently enrolled in a San Jose-area K-12 school
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Demonstrated leadership or community service (minimum 20 hours in the past 12 months)
  • One letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, or community leader

Award Details

  • Amount: $1,000 one-time award
  • Number of awards: Up to 10 per year
  • Disbursement: Issued as a check to the student (or parent/guardian for students under 18) for educational use

How to Apply

  1. Confirm eligibility based on GPA and service hours
  2. Write a personal essay (500 words) describing your academic goals and how you've contributed to your community
  3. Submit application with transcript, essay, and recommendation letter by March 1
  4. Notification: Winners announced at our annual Spring Awards Ceremony in April

Emergency Education Grant

Emergency Assistance

Life is unpredictable. When a family faces a sudden financial crisis — job loss, medical emergency, natural disaster, or housing instability — a student's education shouldn't be the casualty. The Emergency Education Grant provides rapid financial assistance so students can stay in school and keep learning during difficult times.

Eligibility

  • Currently enrolled in a San Jose-area K-12 school
  • Experiencing a documented financial emergency that directly impacts the student's ability to attend or participate in school
  • Verification from a school counselor, social worker, or administrator

Award Details

  • Amount: Up to $750 per student per academic year
  • Turnaround: Applications are reviewed within 5 business days; funds disbursed within 10 business days of approval
  • Use: May cover school fees, transportation, uniforms, supplies, technology, or other immediate educational needs

How to Apply

  1. Contact us at info@adelantepta.org or call to request an Emergency Grant application
  2. Complete the short application describing the emergency and immediate educational need
  3. Provide verification from a school official confirming the student's enrollment and the nature of the hardship
  4. Submit — there is no fixed deadline; applications are accepted year-round on a rolling basis, subject to available funds

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply to more than one program?

Yes. Students may apply to both the Adelante Scholarship Fund and the Academic Achievement Award in the same year. Emergency Education Grants are separate and can be requested regardless of other awards.

How are funds disbursed?

Scholarship Fund awards are paid directly to the student's school or as reimbursement for verified expenses. Achievement Awards are issued as checks. Emergency Grants are disbursed in the fastest method available (typically direct deposit or check).

Are awards renewable?

The Adelante Scholarship Fund is renewable annually. The Academic Achievement Award is a one-time award, but students may reapply in subsequent years. Emergency Grants are limited to one per student per academic year.

What if I miss a deadline?

Scholarship Fund and Achievement Award deadlines are firm. We encourage students to apply early. Emergency Grants have no deadline and are accepted year-round.

Do I need to be a U.S. citizen?

For the Scholarship Fund, applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or DACA recipients. The Achievement Award and Emergency Grant are open to all enrolled students regardless of immigration status.

Who reviews the applications?

Applications are reviewed by our volunteer Scholarship Committee, which includes educators, financial aid professionals, and former recipients. All reviews are conducted confidentially.
